A Guide to Caravan and Camping Holidays in Europe
Caravan and camping holidays are a growing travel trend in Europe — a format offering both freedom and savings for families tired of hotel prices and for adventure seekers. Watching the Alpine scenery from your tent in the morning, or anchoring at a caravan park on the Adriatic coast; it's a very different experience from the conventional idea of a holiday. How do you plan a European camping holiday?
The Basics of Camping: Tent, Caravan or Bungalow?
European campsites offer three types of accommodation: traditional camping where you pitch your own tent (€10–25 per person per night), a caravan or motorhome (rented or your own vehicle), and a ready bungalow or glamping tent (€60–150 per night). Glamping has become popular in recent years, especially among couples and families.
Campsite quality across Europe is quite high; large camping complexes with Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, a children's playground, a shop and a restaurant are known as 'camping resorts'. Croatia and France are especially developed in this area.
Europe's Best Camping Regions
Croatia's Dalmatian coast: Camping in the Adriatic's crystal sea and rocky coves is one of Europe's best camping experiences. The area around Krka and the Plitvice Lakes is ideal for a nature-camping combination; around Dubrovnik a beach-and-historic-city combination.
France's Provence and Côte d'Azur: Campsites around Nice, Cannes and Arles offer a sea + culture combination. France is one of the world's most developed countries for camping infrastructure; sites certified by the FFCC and Camping Qualité are reliable.
Italy (Tuscany, Lake Garda): Italian campsites are unique in terms of scenery and cuisine. The area around Lake Garda is especially famous for family camps. In Tuscany, farm campsites among the vineyards are for glamping enthusiasts.
Caravan Rental: Prices and Practical Information
Renting a caravan or motorhome is common in Europe. In high season, a small campervan costs €700–1,200 a week; a large motorhome €1,500–3,000. Rental platforms: Motorhome Republic, CamperDays, PaulCamper (peer-to-peer). To drive a Europe-plated vehicle from Turkey, the rental company must grant Schengen permission — clarify before signing the contract.
Fuel is a big cost item; a campervan averaging 300–400 km a day consumes roughly €200–400 of fuel a week. Campsite nights are in the €15–40 band; calculated this way, a 2-person caravan holiday is usually 20–35% more affordable than a hotel holiday of the same comfort level.
Planning, Booking and Setting Off from Turkey
The ACSI CampingCard and Camping Key Europe cards offer discounts at more than 3,000 European campsites; they add up for families camping a week or longer. Large campsites can be booked via Booking.com and Pitchup.com.
It's possible to go from Turkey to Europe by car or caravan; the Balkan route (Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia) or by ferry (İzmir–Trieste/Venice, Turkey–Italy lines). A ferry + caravan combination from Istanbul to Croatia is the classic way to start a European camping tour from Turkey.
