Top 10 Things to Do in Dubai
Dubai is a metropolis that has perhaps undergone the fastest urban transformation in human history — turning in the last 40 years from a desert into one of the most visited cities in the world. Towering skyscrapers, artificial islands, the world's largest shopping malls and a ski slope in the middle of the desert — Dubai is a city that has embraced pushing limits as a way of life. We've compiled 10 things you must do in Dubai, reachable from Istanbul with a flight of just 3 hours.
1. Burj Khalifa — The World's Tallest Building
At 828 metres, the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, is Dubai's undisputed icon. Watching the city's 360-degree panorama from the observation deck on the 124th or 148th floor is a unique experience. Buy your tickets online in advance — daytime prices rise noticeably, and sunset sessions are especially in demand.
The Dubai Fountain at the foot of the building can be watched for free every evening; this show, in which a 275-metre body of water takes shape to music, takes place at regular intervals especially after 18:00.
2. Dubai Mall & Aquarium
One of the world's largest shopping malls, the Dubai Mall is a place to spend time far beyond shopping. Its giant aquarium is home to more than 33,000 marine creatures; the glass-tunnel walk is wonderful for kids. With an ice rink, VR experience zones and more than 200 dining options, the venue can easily fill an entire day.
3. The Desert Safari
One of the most distinctive parts of the Dubai experience is undoubtedly the desert safari. About 45–60 minutes from the city, dune bashing in 4x4 vehicles among the golden sand dunes, riding camels, sandboarding and dining under the stars in a traditional Bedouin tent are among the most authentic experiences you can have in Dubai.
The sunset safari is far more popular than the morning one; the sunset view over the dunes is made for photography. We recommend organising it through your hotel or a reliable tour agency.
4. Dubai Creek & the Historic Al Fahidi District
Beneath the gleaming surface of modern Dubai lies an old trading town. The historic Al Fahidi district stretching along Dubai Creek, with its traditional wind-tower buildings and narrow dirt lanes, is the city's most authentic corner. The Dubai Museum and the surrounding handicraft galleries form the cultural heart of this area.
Traditional wooden boats called abra cross to the other bank over the Creek for a symbolic fare of 1 dirham. The Gold Souk and Spice Souk on the Deira side are shopping spots that should not be missed.
5. Palm Jumeirah & Dubai's Beaches
Visible from space, the artificial island of Palm Jumeirah is one of Dubai's signature addresses with its luxury hotels and villas. From the observation deck at the top of Atlantis The Palm, you can view the whole island from above. Along the JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) shore you can sunbathe freely and stroll along a seafront that rivals the Mediterranean.
Practical Tips: Best Time, Transport & Budget
The ideal time to visit Dubai is October–April; in summer temperatures can exceed 45°C and most outdoor activities are adversely affected. The metro network easily reaches the main tourist spots; with a Nol card it can be used on both the metro and buses.
The Istanbul–Dubai route is operated by many airlines; by comparing prices among Emirates, flydubai and Turkish Airlines you can find a suitable combination. Dubai's upscale hotels span a wide price range; hotels located a little outside the city centre offer serious savings.
