The choice of holiday accommodation is no longer just a hotel — aparthotels, Airbnb apartments, hostels and boutique hotels answer different needs differently. Hotel: Reliable, Serviced, Comfortable
A hotel is the safest accommodation option, with standardised service, a 24/7 reception, a cleaning service and usually a good location. In a city you're visiting for the first time, on a short trip or a business trip, a hotel is a clear choice. Breakfast-included options make morning planning easier.
Disadvantages: the per-room price can be more expensive than renting an apartment; there's no kitchen; common areas can be crowded. On family or group travel, the cost of two separate rooms leaves Airbnb or an aparthotel behind.
Aparthotel: The Winner for Long Stays
Aparthotels (serviced apartments), with a kitchen or kitchenette, are noticeably more economical than hotels especially for stays of 5+ nights. They're ideal for those who want to keep food costs under control, families with children and long-term travellers. They're also advantageous for building a local life and feeling the neighbourhood atmosphere.
In aparthotels there's usually no daily cleaning (weekly or check-out cleaning); reception hours may be limited. These disadvantages don't pose a big problem on a long stay; on a short holiday they can be noticeable.
Airbnb: Local Experience and Space
Airbnb (and Vrbo, Booking.com's home options) consists of hosts' rental apartments. The whole place is yours alone; a kitchen, a living room, sometimes a garden or balcony — comfort incomparable to a hotel room, especially on a family holiday. Prices can be 20–40% cheaper than hotels at the right location and dates.
Airbnb's risks: the check-in procedure is sometimes complicated (self check-in, code lock), expectation-versus-reality differences (photos can be misleading), and cancellation policies vary by host. Reading host reviews carefully and choosing properties rated 4.7+ significantly reduces the risk.
What to Choose in Which Situation?
Short holiday (1–3 nights), a first-time city, business trip → Hotel. Family holiday (4+ nights), budget priority, need a kitchen → Aparthotel or Airbnb. Couple / romantic holiday, local experience, a specific neighbourhood → A boutique Airbnb apartment. Long trip (10+ nights) → Aparthotel or a monthly rental.
