Where to Stay in Paris? The 5 Best Hotel Areas
Paris carries a different character in every district; the neighbourhood you stay in largely shapes your holiday experience. Waking up in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, getting lost in the historic streets of the Marais, or breathing in the artistic atmosphere of Montmartre? Here are the 5 best hotel areas in Paris and the pros and cons of each.
1. Le Marais (3rd & 4th Arrondissement) — Historic Charm
Marais is one of the most characteristic and walkable districts in Paris. Medieval narrow streets, the Jewish quarter, LGBTQ+ bars, design shops and the Musée Picasso all together. Place des Vosges — the oldest square in Paris — is a magnificent open space where you can have your morning breakfast.
Accommodation options in Marais are wide: from €80–150 a night boutique hotels to €300+ luxury properties. Metro access is good (Saint-Paul, Hôtel de Ville). Both culturally and gastronomically the most intense district of Paris; one of the most enjoyable starting points for first-time visitors.
2. Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th Arrondissement) — Literary Paris
Where Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir drank coffee and James Joyce wrote, Saint-Germain is one of the most prestigious and expensive districts in Paris. Café de Flore, Les Deux Magots and the Shakespeare and Company bookshop are symbols of its cultural heritage.
Accommodation prices are high (€150–400+ a night), but the centrality of the location and having the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and Notre-Dame within walking distance can justify the budget. The top choice for a romantic holiday and literature lovers.
3. Montmartre (18th Arrondissement) — The Artists' Hill
Built below the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, Montmartre is the district that looks down on Paris and offers perhaps the city's most iconic panorama. With narrow stepped streets, local cafés and marketplaces, it's an area that is touristy but keeps its authentic atmosphere.
In terms of price it's more affordable than other central districts (€80–180 a night); but late at night and on some lower streets it can feel less safe. Easy access to the centre by metro. A good option for those seeking a quiet, romantic holiday away from lively nightlife.
4. Opéra & the Grands Boulevards (9th Arrondissement) — A Practical Centre
The Opéra area is a practical option for its transport centrality and price balance. Department stores (Galeries Lafayette, Printemps), the Opéra Garnier and the Gare du Nord station are in the immediate vicinity. A good base for those not staying more than 1–2 nights in Paris or wanting mainly to explore other districts.
Price range €90–200 a night; some 3-star hotels are noticeably more affordable than those in the Marais. The characteristic Paris atmosphere is a little less intense than in other districts — not for those who see that as a downside, but ideal if you're after efficiency.
5. Around the Eiffel Tower (7th Arrondissement) — An Iconic Location
If you want to see the Eiffel Tower view from your room, the 7th or 15th arrondissement. Hotels in this location may charge a premium for the 'Tour Eiffel view'; depending on budget, seeing the Eiffel from your window costs €20–50 extra.
The area is surrounded by embassies and official institutions; quieter but a little sterile. If having a picnic in the Champ de Mars park while looking at the Eiffel meets your holiday expectations, the location value is undeniable. Les Invalides, the Musée Rodin and the Pont de l'Alma are within walking distance.
