Most Affordable International Holiday Destinations in 2026

An international holiday doesn't have to be expensive. When you choose the right destination and the right time, there are dozens of beautiful places just 1–4 hours' flight from Turkey where you can holiday without straining your budget. In this guide we've compiled realistic international holiday options for a Turkish-lira budget in 2026, along with destinations that offer a currency advantage.

The Balkans: Close, Cheap, Undiscovered

Albania, North Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are Balkan countries reachable from Turkey with a 1.5–2 hour flight, where the euro is either not yet used or living costs are far lower. The Albanian coast (Saranda, Ksamil) offers one of the cheapest Mediterranean beach holidays — overnight stays can be found in the €20–40 band.

Montenegro, meanwhile, is becoming increasingly popular with its dramatic fjord scenery and the historic town of Kotor; prices have not yet reached the level of Croatia or Italy. Bosnia's capital Sarajevo is both cultural and budget-friendly; food, accommodation and activities cost a third of Western Europe's prices.

Central Asia: The Highest Currency Advantage

Uzbekistan (Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara), Kyrgyzstan and Georgia are among the destinations where the Turkish lira looks strongest. Georgia, in particular, is attractive year-round thanks to a 2-hour flight from Istanbul, affordable accommodation and extremely delicious cuisine. In Tbilisi it's possible to find a lovely boutique hotel for $25–50 a night.

Uzbekistan holds the most magnificent heritage of the Silk Road civilisation. UNESCO-listed sites such as Registan Square and the Shah-i-Zinda mausoleum offer an extremely economical trip with accommodation at $15–30 a night and restaurant meals for $2–5.

Southeast Asia: Far but Worth It

Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia (Bali) are destinations that are far away but reachable from Turkey with connecting flights, and where the daily budget stretches the most. In Vietnam it's possible to manage accommodation, food and activities on $20–30 a day. In Thailand, cities like Chiang Mai or Pai are far more affordable than beach alternatives.

In these destinations the biggest cost is flights; but with bookings made 3–4 months in advance, finding a ticket around $300–500 on the Istanbul–Bangkok or Istanbul–Hanoi routes is no surprise. For those who want a distant but high-quality holiday, the value-for-money ratio is extraordinary.

Budget-Friendly Options in Europe

Beyond the expensive capitals of Western Europe, there are many budget-friendly European cities. Bulgaria (Sofia, Plovdiv), Romania (Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca) and Hungary (Budapest) are outside the eurozone and among the lowest living costs in Europe. They are 2–4 hours away from Istanbul by direct or one-stop flights.

Budapest in particular stands out for both cultural richness and being budget-friendly; with its thermal baths, riverside taverns and cheap food, it's ideal for a weekend getaway.
