Greek Islands: Which Island Is Right for You?

Which of Greece's more than 6,000 islands you choose completely determines the character of your holiday. A romantic sunset, intense nightlife, deep history, or a quiet family break? Each island appeals to a different crowd, and the differences between them are about far more than just geography.

Santorini — Romance and Photography

Santorini is a volcanic island with the most-photographed sunset in the world. The white-washed houses of Oia, the boutique hotels with infinity pools and the caldera view make it the top choice for honeymoons and couples. But its popularity has a price: in July–August the island overflows and prices peak.

There is a direct flight from Istanbul, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Best time: May–June and September–October — both quieter and half the price. If your accommodation is a cave hotel in Oia or Imerovigli, the experience is completely different; Fira is the more affordable central option.

Mykonos — Nightlife and Glamour

Mykonos hosts Europe's liveliest island nightlife and the most famous Paradise Beach parties. High-profile visitors, luxury beach clubs and DJ sets have made the island an international entertainment hub. But in the quieter seasons (April–May, October) the architectural beauty of the small white town also comes to the fore.

Mykonos is expensive — price levels close to Santorini. It's not budget-friendly; but for those who want to experience it, it's a once-in-a-holiday list item.

Rhodes — History and Affordable Prices

Rhodes stands out for being historic, affordable and the largest Greek island closest to Istanbul. The Old Town of Rhodes, surrounded by medieval walls, is on the UNESCO list; the Acropolis of Lindos is the island's most impressive spot. The beach options are strong too.

About 55–65 minutes' flight from Istanbul. Accommodation appeals to every budget; all-inclusive resorts, in-town boutique hotels and Airbnb options are available. A similar Aegean experience to Santorini or Mykonos is possible for less than a third of the budget.

Crete — Big Island, Big Variety

Greece's largest island, Crete, holds far too much to fully explore in a single week: the Palace of Knossos (Minoan civilisation), the Samaria Gorge hike, the pinkish beach of Elafonisi and the Venetian harbour of Chania.

Crete is a versatile island appealing to every budget and age. Family holidays, young travellers, culture tours, trekking — all are in Crete. There are direct flights from Istanbul; about 1.5–2 hours. Depending on whether you base yourself in Heraklion or Chania, you discover different faces of the island.

Corfu — The Green Island and Ionian Air

Unlike the Aegean islands, Corfu (Kerkyra) stands out with its lush greenery, its old town bearing traces of Venetian and British architecture, and its calm family atmosphere. The turquoise water and limestone cliffs of Paleokastritsa cove are among the most beautiful sea views in Greece.

Corfu is the complete opposite of crowded Mykonos or Santorini — quieter, greener, less touristy. Direct seasonal flights from Istanbul are available; about 1.5 hours.
